What do I use Safflower Oil For?
Why do I see Safflower oil with oil paints and what do I do with it?
Oil Painting Medium
Safflower oil is designed to be used with oil paints. Langridge specifically uses them as the carrier with their whites, and light yellows because it is less inclined to yellow over time.
Slow Drying
Refined Safflower Oil specifically increases the slip of paint and can take from 3-6 days to be touch dry. Cold pressed Safflower Oil has a slightly faster drying time.
Safer Cleaning
Safflower oil can be used as an alternative to clean your brushes whilst painting which allows for a less toxic studio environment.
Characteristics:
- Less yellowing than linseed or walnut oils
- Increases gloss and transparency
- Slow drying
- Over 72 hours to touch dry
- Adds a slippery quality to the paint
Arthouse Northside stocks Langridge Refined and Cold Pressed Safflower Oils in a variety of sizes.
